ENDORSEMENT was a HUGE surprise. The way he rated, always full of run but not unmanageable...his big improvement begs the "bounce" question. Without steroids to aid in his recovery, I'm not sure he can repeat this. He does have five weeks to recover, but I've got the nagging feeling he just hasn't had enough of a foundation for this massive effort not to take a physical toll.
If I owned him, I'd be tickled about his potential and it would be difficult not to try him in the Derby anyway. He's earned his way in. Even if he bounces, there's time for him to rest/regroup for later in the year. Your thoughts?
RE: GRINDSTONE, he was a Lukas...back in the day he turned some allowance horses into Derby winners. His only legit Derby winner was WINNING COLORS and TABASCO CAT also had the foundation. If not for an oversight that didn't have him Derby nominated, his Preakness and Belmont domination told me he should have won the Triple Crown. GRINDSTONE and CHARISMATIC both succumbed to injuries as a result of their quick, improbable improvement. I'm afraid the same could happen to ENDORSEMENT.
As you pointed out, he's so well bred I'd be thinking late summer classics: Travers and BC Classic.
RE: Lane's End...I'm taking another look at DEAN'S KITTEN. He's got the proper foundation he's run really fast on turf, and won as the rider pleased in the Lane's End. He was tactical and could absolutely adore the dirt in the Derby.
RE: Louisiana Derby...MISSION IMPAZIBLE has the same lack of foundation concerns but he was even more impressive than ENDORSEMENT who had dead aim the entire trip. MI Broke well, came back to the rider, rated inside and took dirt, was shuffled on the backside yet he responded and ran up between horses to challenge for the lead, then had the fortitude to run on.
DROSSELMEYER is just developing too slowly, plus Desormeaux gave him a horrendous ride. Maybe they give him another chance in the Lexington, I think they should wait for the Peter Pan to prep for the Belmont. One paced, keeps grinding...he'll be much better with maturity.
